You might see him tearing through campus on his skateboard, or on a mission trip to New Orleans over spring break. Or maybe you will see Timothy Jepson where he is probably known best on campus: on the soccer field.
Whatever he does, Tim does with passion and vigor. As captain of the men's soccer team, he led the Blue Devils to the ACC regular season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
The Duke junior, a native of Yorba Linda, California, also excels in the classroom. He was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District Second Team this past season. Requirements for consideration are a 3.2 GPA or better and excellence on the soccer playing field. Duke's district includes some of the best soccer and academic schools in the country.
Tim's time seems to be endless. Since his freshman year, he has been heavily involved with Athletes in Action, a Christian ministry group for athletes. In March 2006, he joined Summit Church in Durham on a spring break mission trip to New Orleans, only seven months after Hurricane Katrina struck. This year during spring break, Tim plans to take another church trip, this time to New York City.
Maybe he is able to accomplish so much because he skateboards through campus. "It is absolutely a must for me to have my board with me at school," he says. "It provides me with an escape from the stress and frustration that school typically brings. I'm sure everyone has more than likely seen me bite the dust too. I'm always up for bombing a huge hill."
Tim's hobbies include body surfing and quilting and crocheting, when he has the time. Of course, his forte is soccer. On the field, he always seems to be at the right place at the right time and he makes it look easy. For his role in Duke's championship run, this team captain was named to the 2006 ACC All-Tournament team.
"Tim embodies the concept of the complete and whole person," says Duke's strength and conditioning coach Anne Tamporello. "I really admire who he is mentally and physically, and how strong his beliefs are. He always works hard and gives his best effort."
For Tim, the term "student-athlete" is elevated to an entirely new level. Expect to see him flying around campus on his skateboard, being involved in university activities, succeeding in the classroom, making a quilt for a friend, or maybe playing a board game — oh, and definitely on the soccer field, giving his best and leading the Blue Devils for one more season.
